Atlanta blues singer
Tommy Brown , Bill Doggett and Honky Tonk:
Tommy Worked with Bill Dogget and his orchestra in the 1950's. 50+ years later, sitting in an Atlanta GA dressing room with The Breeze Kings band, he told this story
Tommy claims he wrote Honky Tonk on piano during a set break of a Bill Doggett performance at a dance hall. He said the crowd was high energy and wanted to dance. Fearing they would lose the crowd's enthusiasm, Tommy sat at the piano during the break and started improvising the now familiar shuffle groove we all know. The crowd reacted immediately and Doggett took notice. In no time the band had worked up the famous instrumental and was soon in the studio with their big hit ... to which Tommy only received a vocal credit.
And the rest, as they say, is history.
The above was recalled from memory of many
such conversations with Tommy about his past. Believe or not. We do.
