Tommy Brown's New
House Party
Sunday January 25th at Atlanta's Blind Willies
In December of 2003, bad luck befell another member of our Atlanta Blues family. Atlanta Blues legend Tommy Brown was the victim of a tragic accidental house fire. He lost everything … except his spirit.
For those unfamiliar with him, Tommy Brown started performing in the 1940s. He recorded for major R&B labels in the 1950s, performing with many blues legends and hitting the charts several times including his #1 R&B hit "Weepin and Cryin". He moved from singing to comedy in the 1960s and was known for daring pratfalls and on stage stunts. For the last few decades, Tommy stopped performing and opened his home to provide care for people with special needs. Recently, while continuing his civic work, he returned to singing and has been performing around Atlanta and around the world.
A fundraising benefit was scheduled at Atlanta's legendary blues club Blind Willies on Sunday January 25th 2004. Performances included Tommy Brown, The Breeze Kings, The Shadows, Eddie Tigner, Sweet Betty, Sandra Hall, Heaven Davis and more!! Tremendous support came from not only the local blues community, but also the international blues world - highlighted donations came in from Bonnie Rait, Bruce Igulaur and Alligator Records, and more.
In March of 2004, Tommy finally settled into a new home in Jonesboro GA. He has expressed his never ending thanks and gratitude to all of those who supported him with love, prayers, gifts, and financial support.
As a means of ongoing support, the Atlanta Blues Society has set up a special Tommy Brown Emergency Housing Fund. As the ABS is a 501c3 non-profit organization, all donations made to this fund through the ABS are tax deductible.
Tommy Brown is truly one of a kind. We encourage you to go to atlantablues.org and lend a hand to this man who has given so much over the years.
